. but senior citizens are the strongest element of romney's coalition. doing very well with them right now. >> john, i know that every day as we get closer to the election, we need things to talk about, and the polls are all we have. how many people was this, 849 or something? what's the number? >> you talking about the national poll? >> yeah, either one. >> in the swing state polls, we do 1,300 registered voters. >> doesn't matter what the actual numbers are. i remember taking statistics, so i understand standard -- i understand how they try to make it scientific. but you know what i'm saying. you take any 900 people at any given tile and you think about 200 million people, whatever it is, but then we microanalyze the moist minute details because that's what we do as journalists. i can give you polls -- i saw a poll last week that had -- it was plus-four for the president, and then another one was down six. it was an individual state. and then you got the deviations between rasmussen consistently and some of the other, whether it's quinnipiac or the other ones. that's all we got, though.

of the ball to the delivery of the plate. mitt romney's got to find precisely the right arm slot. aggression with the right amount of respect for a popular president. he's got to figure out a way to flush out his agenda without getting to the unpopular parts he's been avoiding talking about like what are the tax breaks he's going to take to get the rates down. he's got to be on offense but not too much. it's hard. everything went right for george bush in 2000. gore was bad, he had orange make-up. he got in bush's face, that didn't go very well. bush overperformed, no foreign policy experience, he did very well. and the bush team outspun the gore people because they pushed their story line. and you went from, you know, minus five before the debate to plus a couple afterward and went on to win that disputed victory. but yes, romney can do it, he was a smart guy, good in most of the debates for the republicans. on the other hand, obama's pretty smart too and there's not much expectation to think he's going to screw up. >> what about, john, playing to that dull incompetent thing? he said in his

did you think? >> 320,000 employees, david cuts right to the matter. maybe there should be 220,000 employees. obviously, there were no questions that were substantively answered. that's okay. romney doesn't answer substantive questions. obama doesn't answer substantive questions. whitman doesn't answer substantive questions. i get that. three politicians, three answers that you don't really get to challenge them. >> the difference is we see the impact immediately, like now. like down 1.5%. i mean, investors don't have a reason to be in. she sort of admitted it, you know, if you think that hewlett-packard is going to be okay in three years, then that's where you want to be. two to three years, we don't know where we'll be in two to three years. >> i thought it was a bit of a kodak moment, frankly. >> really? because that's a loaded -- >> that's damning. >> a lot of people would say that's a loaded comment. >> i've been telling people to sell this thing nine ways to sunday ever since hurd left. she didn't slight hurd like in the maria interview. i will come back and say i always
